Par un matin brumeux d'automne, les propriétaires des cafés du quartier Montmartre remarquent un phénomène étrange. Un grand chat roux, élégant et mystérieux, commence à visiter leurs établissements, un par un.
Le chat arrive toujours à sept heures précises. Il s'assoit près de la porte, se lèche délicatement les pattes, et regarde les clients avec ses yeux verts brillants. Curieusement, il porte un petit foulard bleu autour du cou.

Marie, la propriétaire du Café des Artistes, est la première à lui donner un morceau de croissant. "Il est si poli," explique-t-elle aux clients. "Il attend patiemment et ne fait jamais de bruit." Le chat la remercie avec un petit "miaou" mélodieux et part tranquillement.
